The Islands are the place for Savannah’s easy-going residents who want to truly immerse themselves in the coastal lifestyle. These quiet, marshside suburbs exude Southern charm and tranquility. Oak trees dripping with Spanish moss and stately pine trees line the streets and yards of this community’s many residential offerings from affordable apartment complexes and condominiums to luxurious waterfront mansions and everything in between.
Situated approximately 15-minutes by car from both Tybee Island and Savannah’s Historic District, the islands are among the most conveniently located and sought-after of Savannah’s neighborhoods. They consist of three adjacent barrier island communities — Whitemarsh Island, Talahi Island, and Wilmington Island. These charming, laid-back locales offer a small-town feel within the greater Savannah area with shopping centers, restaurants, and parks only a few moments’ drive from any home. The Islands also offer several highly desirable public and private school options for kids of all ages.
The area’s YMCA of Coastal Georgia provides peaceful walking trails, a gym, childcare, and camp for nearby residents. Boaters, fishers, and watersport enthusiasts enjoy the several available marinas, including Hogan’s Marina with its massive dry storage facility. Boaters can easily access the Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge from these launchpoints. The Islands also offer two membership-based clubs. Wilmington Island’s Savannah Country Club features picturesque Donald Ross-designed fairways, tennis courts, and a pool. On Whitemarsh Island, the esteemed Savannah Yacht Club is a favorite for watersports, events, and fine dining.
Wilmington Island is the largest of the three islands and is home to nearly 15,000 residents. Several smaller communities coexist within the island including Wilmington Park, the largest residential community on Wilmington Island, and Olde Towne, a favorite for families with children and many neighborhood events throughout the year. Like Wilmington Island, Whitemarsh Island also offers many diverse subdivisions including some gated communities. Talahi Island, located across Highway 80 from Wilmington Island, is a small but sought-after community with many waterfront homes along Bull River and Turner Creek.
The islands share many wonderful restaurants. The Current Kitchen & Cocktails serves up Asian fusion in a chic atmosphere. Jalapenos Mexican restaurant it’s a regular weeknight hangout for local residents. Basil’s Pizza & Deli is a great spot to grab a slice and listen to some music, or head next door to Molly MaGuire’s for seafood on the patio.
